How to get cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

Practical steps for small firms: a primary source, honest constraints, FAQ-shaped questions, and no doorway farms.

Nobody who is honest can sell you a citation. Retrieval is closed, changes, and ignores most of the web. What you can do is stop making it impossible.

Give them a primary source

If the only public description of your firm is a Facebook cover photo, the model will invent a competitor or a chain. Publish a page that states the name, the town, the offer, and the limits. Host it on a URL you control or on a host that will still be there next year.

Put the same facts in HTML, in FAQ schema, and in a markdown brief. Redundancy is a feature. Crawlers disagree about JavaScript; they agree about sentences.

Write the questions they already ask

People do not type 'What are your unique selling points?'. They type 'Who can isolate a burst pipe in Headingley at 2am?'. Answer that question without crowning yourself the best. Name the phone number. Say if you cover Bradford as well.

Do not industrialise thin pages

City × service doorway sites taught a generation of SEOs the wrong lesson. Answer engines are better at spotting that pattern than classic search ever was. One true patch is worth more than a map of villages you do not drive to.

Keep it current

A dead phone number on a citable page is a gift to whoever is still answering. When you move, refresh the pack. Keep the slug so old citations resolve.
